Genetics of malaria parasites

Professor D Walliker

The current research interests of my group are (i) mechanisms of genetic recombination in the mosquito phase of the malaria parasite's life-cycle, (ii) the genetics of resistance to antimalarial drugs, and (iii) genetic mechanisms giving rise to the diversity of parasites seen in natural infections. Research work is carried out on the human malaria species Plasmodium falciparum and on the rodent parasite P. chabaudi. Field studies are currently being undertaken in collaboration with research groups in Sudan and Mali, as well as with other laboratories in the UK and elsewhere
