УWhy Israel is ShrinkingФ

By Paul Eidelberg

Few people understand why Israel, undefeated in war, is withdrawing to her precarious 1949 armistice lines.а Before discussing this bizarre phenomenon, let us briefly review the stages of Israel's truncation.

ааааааааааа The first step in Israel's withdrawal to her 1949 borders was taken in September 1978 by the Likud-led government of Menachem Begin, a vaunted nationalist who signed away the Sinai to Egypt, a military dictatorship whose tourist maps of the Middle East still omit the word "Israel."

ааааааааааа The second step was taken in September 1993 by the Labor-led government of Yitzhak Rabin, a reputedly principled politician who signed away Gaza, Judea, and Samaria to a criminal organization called the PLO whose stationery logo depicts Israel as "Palestine."

The third step in this shrinkage of Israel is being taken by the same Rabin who, in violation of his and his party's pledge to the nation before the June 1992 Knesset elections, has offered to surrender of the Golan Heights to Syria, a tyranny that celebrates the Yom Kippur War by having militia men twist the heads off puppies and then drink their blood.

ааааааааааа Why this territorial retreat, unprecedented in the annals of history?а Why this surrender of vital land to despots?а This land was not only conquered by Israel in 1967 in a war of self-defense, but no less than Dr. Stephen M. Schwebel, a former Legal Adviser of the American State Department, affirmed shortly thereafter that Israel has (or had) a legal claim to this land.

ааааааааааа And if this were not enough, shortly after the 1967 war, the American Joint Chiefs of Staff acknowledged that the Golan Heights, the Judean and Samarian hills, and even parts of the Sinai were essential for Israel's security--a strategic assessment affirmed to this day by American generals.

ааааааааааа Why, then, have various Israeli governments regarded this land, which so many Jews yearned for, and fought and died for, as expendable?а What is it that compels Israeli governments to yield this Jewish patrimony to Arab autocrats who have used this land only as a launching pad to wage war against the Jewish people?

ааааааааааа The conventional answer is that Israel's withdrawal results from her desire for peace on the one hand, and from American pressure on the other.а This is much too simple.а Anwar Sadat had a deeper understanding of the matter.а Shortly after his Jerusalem visit of November 1977, Sadat scornfully declared:а "Fear is the second layer of skin of every Israeli or Jew."а

ааааааааааа This suggests that Israel is retreating to her 1949 borders because Jews are dominated by the fear of violent death.а If so, Israel's professed desire for peace would merely be a facade for cravenness--as would her yielding to American pressure.а One may go even deeper.а

ааааааааааа Almost any normal person fears violent death.а But for Jews to surrender part of their homeland to avoid violent death suggests that they regard violent death as the greatest evil.а Obviously those who deem violent death as the greatest evil will seek peace at any price.

ааааааааааа And yet, only fools or lunatics would expect genuine and abiding peace by surrendering strategic territory to inherently bellicose Arab-Islamic regimes.а Arabs can't live in peace with each other, much less with Jews.а Indeed, the vast majority of Israel's own Arab citizens have openly rejected Israel's right to exist as a sovereign state!

ааааааааааа This being the case, to say fear of violent death underlies Israel's withdrawal to the 1949 "Auschwitz" lines is not sufficient.а To abject fear one may add stupidity or madness.а

ааааааааааа What operates in Israel, however, is not mere stupidity but extraterrestrial stupidity, not mere madness but metaphysically induced madness.а (See Isaiah 44:24-25.)а Which means that the basic reason why Israel is retreating to her 1949 borders is that this so-called Jewish state has relied on everything but G-d for its salvation:а military power, the United States, democratic sympathies abroad, territory, Arab recognition, and now the fantasy that Moslems can be pacified by economic prosperity.а

ааааааааааа Not a single political or religious party has come to grips with the one thing needful:а to bring G-d's Will into the domain of statecraft.а The G-d of Israel has simply been ignored, and this is precisely why Jews are so fearful and bewildered.а Nothing else can rationally and adequately explain Israel's inane and insane withdrawal to her indefensible 1949 borders.
